The All-American TragedyI cupped the phone to my ear.
Speaking quietly at the top of the stairs.
Hoping no one could hear me.
Speaking of heartache on the greatest scale.
His words were poetic, though I don't think he meant it.
It was a suicide note, not a story.
Of the All-American Tragedy.
Some things are better left undefined, he said.
Perfection, beauty.
I sat in silence as I listened, my temples throbing a Drumline rythm.
I told him I loved in, though in no romantic sense.
As I cried, he pleaded with me not to say that.
But it was true.
I loved him like a personal Jesus.
And then a Saint died.
